It was 5:15 am in the morning when I got a call. The man on the other end said she is on her way to the hospital now. Before I had even hung up, Tammy was already out of bed and getting dressed. We rushed out the door and was at the hospital by 6:00 am. Pretty good time from Magnolia to 610 and 290. We found the room she was staying in and I got the camera ready. Colin Gregory Easterwood was born at 8:06 am on October 27, 2004. He scared me for a little while when he got stuck in the birth canal and the Doctor had not even arrived yet. When he did arrive, he accidentally broke his collarbone while trying to get him out. He was 9lbs, 6oz and was 21 1/2" long. No wonder he got stuck!
He came out and was black and blue from the delivery and was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. We got to name him. The nurse put his name on the birth certificate for us. We asked our family to stay away from the hospital to be sensitive to the birth mom's feelings. It wasn't easy and we had to wait 2 days before the hospital would release him, and that meant two days for her to easily change her mind...we prayed constantly.

Baby Emma
EMMA SHAE
Hi baby girl. I am your foster father. We got you when you were only 10 days old and took care of you until you were 1 month old. You turned 1 month today. We were blessed to hold and care for you for a short time until your family could keep you forever. As I write this, I just fed you 3oz of formula and changed your diaper and put you in the crib for a few hours until you are hungry again. I wanted to write you a quick note so you would know how many people love and care for you. You are so blessed to have so many people love you and want you. No matter how old you are or how different your life changes, know that you are special and loved. I don’t know if our paths will ever cross again in the future, but I would like to think someday I might get to meet you again.
In the meantime, I would like you to know that you came to us only 4lbs, 7oz and are leaving us at 5lbs, 12oz and strong as an ox. (at least for a 1 month old baby girl). My wife, Tammy, stayed home from work most of the time you were with us and loved on you constantly. They say babies aren’t really aware, but you are. You can tell when we come in the room, and you love to be held. I was holding you the other night and you lifted your head up and looked right at me, I smiled a big smile and you smiled right back at me. Tammy came over and also saw you smiling at me… I will always remember that moment with you. You were with us such a short time, but you touched a part of me, my wife, and my son (who is adopted) and he was so proud to be your big brother (foster brother). He is 5 years old. He says that when you grow up if anyone picks on you, that he will be your big brother and make sure no one is mean to you.
I don’t know if you will ever get to read this, but my only purpose in writing this is to make sure you know that from the moment you were born, you were loved. Even when you had to be separated from your family and stay with us, you were loved and you will always be in our hearts and memories.
Take care baby girl, and may you enjoy all life has to offer.
With all my love,
- your foster father
